The locomotives of the BC&G and the ERC&L are pretty well documented, much better than the structures along the line. Most of the information presented on these pages is from the all-time roster created by John Killoran and I believe first published in the August 1962 issue of RAILROAD magazine. This seems to be the definitive data base although there appears to be a couple of errors in it. Some information is also from page 80 of the Warden BC&G book. The Gondola Gazette also contained useful information. These sources agree on most counts. There is some confusion about dates that engines were acquired, however. It appears the engines were numbered sequentially in the order they were acquired, but in some cases, notably #9, #13 and #14, engines with larger numbers have earlier acquisition dates assigned. The more common reference to 1954 as acquisition dates for #9, #13 and #14 fits chronologically but does not seem to be consistent with a scrapping date of 1953 for engines #5, #6 and #7 as these engines were presumable replaced by #13 and #14. Any help on this matter would be appreciated.
Notice that the BC&G and ERC&L were so intertwined that, except for the Climax, the locomotive numbering scheme covered both roads' engines.

Below is a BC&G Freight Conductor's Car Report from May 23, 1944 from the authors collection. It contains a couple of surprising pieces of information. Most notably, the locomotive number is clearly stated on the top line as #1526. Ed Kirstatter reports that the B&O records as reported in WIlliam Edson's book STEAM LOCOMOTIVES OF THE B&O - An All-Time Roster (1992) are clear. B&O #1527 and #1529 were sold to the BC&G in 1925 and 1946 respectively. Further, the records show that their #1526 (c/n #16144, blt 8/98 and therefore a sister engine to #1527 and #1529) was retired (does not say scrapped) in 1944. One explanation of this 1944 BC&G Car Report document is that the BC&G had leased #1526 from the B&O and it was in service on this day in May, but the BC&G may have never bought the engine. How long it might have been in service on the BC&G is a matter of speculation, but in 1946 they purchased B&O #1529. It would seem logical that the lease of #1526 would not have extended past the purchase of #1529.
Also of note is the reference to Caboose #15. This is the only reference I've seen to a car #15. Also notice that in the consist there are several BC&G hoppers. Cars numbered 1440, 1032, 1326, 1623 and 1688 are visible on this portion of the report.
